List Your Events

by Sarah Jarvis

It can be very difficult to get television stations or newspapers to cover a story on your book. Even if you’re a local author that is donating to a good cause, it is still ridiculously difficult to get them to respond.

However, many newspapers do accept event listings. If you have a book signing or a reading coming up, I highly encourage you to submit a request for the event to be added online to your local newspapers event listings. I unsuccessfully tried to get two newspapers to write an article about my book, (but certainly have not given up).

However, those same two newspapers did feature my book signing in their events section and the online posting about it was pretty big and included a picture with a review that I uploaded. This kind of exposure is free, so take advantage of it! These not only were visible to people who were looking at the newspapers online they were also easy to share across my social media and also ranked in Google when my book title and author name were searched!

Post on Forums

by Sarah Jarvis

There are many forums that are book related and free to join. I posted about my book on one forum called BookTalk.org.

Book Talk

Although my post didn’t get too many comments, it opened up some opportunities for me. First, the owner of the forum liked that I was donating part of my profits and trying to raise awareness for a good cause, so he offered me a deal to advertise on the forum for a price I could afford.

Second, my post on the forum shows up on the first page of Google’s search results when searching for Moral Dissipation. This helps me take up more spots on the search engine results page when the title of my book is search, which leaves less room for possible competition.

Instagram for authors

Using Hashtags to Increase Visibility

on Instagram and Google

by Sarah Jarvis

Who would have thought that authors could benefit from Instagram?

The app can be a powerful tool at getting your pictures recognized in Google images as well as spreading the word about your book. You can search for people who are interested in the topic that your book is about and follow them. Then, post interesting pictures related to your topic and hope that they follow you back.

What works better than hoping is adding many hashtags. For example, when I post pictures on my Instagram about my book, I usually use #raiseaddictionawareness and #heroin as hashtags, as well as a few other related hashtags. I also hashtag the name of the book #MoralDissipation and my author name #SMJarvis.

The hashtags like #heroin are things that people might be searching for on Instagram. Once your picture is posted it will show up to anyone searching that hashtag as long as you have a public profile on Instagram. People can then follow you and like your pictures.

Using hashtags for the book title and my author name help search engines connect those pictures with those images. If you go into Google and search images and type Moral Dissipation in the Google search bar, many of the images that show up are pulled from my Instagram. While you cannot control exactly which images Google or other search engines serve up, you can suggest images the through Instagram hashtags.

Part Two

Use Basic SEO

on your Website, Blog or Book Description

by Sarah Jarvis

If you have a website, I highly recommend optimizing your content, meta-data, H1 tags and obtaining quality backlinks, so when people go to search for good books to read on Google, yours pops up.

If you don’t have your own website there are still a few things you can optimize to help increase your visibility. I would imagine most authors just said, meta-what? Don’t worry too much about the first sentence, unless you do have a website and are interested in SEO. If that is the case I would suggest checking out The Beginners Guide to SEO by Moz.

For those authors who just want to do simple optimization on their blog or book description, here are a few pointers.

Sometimes when you are adding a description of your book or an about the author, your platform allows you to edit the HTML. If that is the case I highly recommend adding <h1></h1> around a descriptive title of your book. For example, my book is titled Moral Dissipation, but when writing about it if I was allowed to edit the HTML, my title would look something like this:

<h1>Moral Dissipation: Suspenseful Heroin Addiction, Romance, Fiction Novel about the Struggles of a College Graduate who ends up a Homeless Heroin Addict</h1>

Once the blurb is live you will no longer see the <h1></h1>, but those tags tell search engines it is a title and your description will rank higher in search engines for the keywords in that title.

You don’t want to make the title too long, because that looks spammy to search engines. You also want to make sure it sounds normal when read out loud or it might be considered keyword stuffing, which is another spam tactic you want to avoid.

On Amazon the Editorial Reviews section allows you to edit basic HTML when writing about the author. In addition to including the above heading, I also wrote an informative blurb about my book making sure to bold <b> </b> the keywords for which I want it to rank, such as fiction novel, romance, heroin addiction, and donating because I am donating 10% of my profits to organizations that help recovering heroin addicts.

If you have anything that stands out or makes your book different, put a bold tag around it.
